capitalizeは、capital=「首都」「資本」の動詞です。
つまり、「資本化する」「＜会社・事業＞に投資する」の意味です。
また「大文字で書く[印刷する]」といった意味もあります。

capitalize on
= Take the chance to gain advantage from.

take the chance 「機会を得る」
gain advantage from 「優位にたつ」、「～から得る」

よって「うまく利用しようとする・得ようとする」というような意味あいになります。
